We have recently seen a facination with solar electricity from the public and various governments. As we are an exclusively solar thermal (heat) business, we have a few thoughts about this. Yes, solar electricity is marvelous, but it's MUCH MUCH more expensive than solar thermal system for the energy delivered.
For comparison, the cost of delivering one kilowatt-hour of heat from a solar pool heating system is about 43 cents - based upon natural gas at 42 cents per cubic metre.
The cost of delivering one kilowatt-hour of heat from a glazed solar water heating system is about 5 times more expensive at $2.12 - based upon natural gas at 42 cents per cubic metre.
The cost of delivering one kilowatt hour of electricity for a solar electric (PV-grid tied) system is about 26 times more expensive at $11.36!
Note: theses costs are based upon February 2009 costs in Ontario Canada.
These days much is made of going "Green" and solar is often held as a means of getting there. As the example above illustrates, some types of "solar green" cost much more than others to deliver the same benefit. Solar thermal provides a much bigger financial and environmental benefit per dollar spent than solar electricity.
